Playing blackjack

Blackjack, which also goes by the name twenty-one and pontoon is a very popular casino card game and is probably the most recognizable casino game of them all. Blackjack has been portrayed as a game of skill and guts in many of the shows and movies we see today. Much of blackjacks popularity has been attributed to its mix of chance and skill. Its publicity in pop culture, generated by movies, TV, and its connection with card counting, all help make blackjack the face of casino gambling.

Enough talk about how popular it is, its time to learn how to actually play blackjack. Playing blackjack is fairly simple, mastering it, however, is next to impossible. In blackjack, the dealer has to face from one to seven players. When playing blackjack, each player is playing his hand against the dealer by himself. Before any cards are dealt, all players must place a bet in the betting box. After the player places his bet, he is dealt two cards. The object of playing blackjack is to have a higher card total than the dealer while at the same time not going over 21. Spot cards count as themselves, meaning a 7 of hearts would count as a 7, all face cards count as 10, and an ace can count as either 1 or 11. The game starts with the player looking at his cards and deciding whether or not to take an additional card (this is called a hit). If you like your hand as is, you can choose not to take any additional cards, this is referred to as standing. If you bust then you lose, after you bust, the dealer plays his or her had, if they bust, they lose to all remaining players. If neither the player or dealer bust then the higher hand wins. If the hand ends in a tie, then neither the player nor dealer lose and the hand is pushed. Playing blackjack requires you to make correct decisions regarding whether to hit or stand. Some people have the ability count cards, this allows them to make better decisions and put their money on the line when they know they have good odds. Counting cards can actually bring the house edge down to zero and sometimes can even give the player an advantage. As I mentioned before, blackjack is a simple but very difficult game to master.
